Stump grinding and stump removal in Germantown, Nashville

Germantown is a historic district of 1800s Victorian rowhouses and townhomes, with new townhome developments filling in around them. Yards are tiny, mostly courtyards and brick patios, but mature oaks and street trees are everywhere. Stump work here is small-equipment, careful work in very tight spaces.

This page is part of our stump grinding service across Nashville, TN; new to it? Read how stump grinding works. Need the stump fully dug out for a patio, pool or addition? See stump removal in Nashville. Roots running across the lawn? See root removal. Live nearby but not sure you’re covered? We work across the Nashville area, including homes near county lines.

Courtyards and brick patios

A Germantown stump is often in a courtyard surrounded by brick, a wall or a rowhouse foundation, and the only way in may be a narrow gate or passage. Measure the narrowest point and send a photo. That tells us whether a compact grinder fits or some of the work has to be done by hand. If brick pavers sit over the roots, ask how they’ll be handled.

Old street trees and construction clearing

Old street trees and construction clearing are the other common jobs. If the stump is in the strip along the street, check who is responsible for that tree before you schedule anything. For new townhome projects, stumps under footings or slabs need full removal.

Salemtown, just north

Requests also come in from Salemtown, just north of Germantown around Morgan Park. It has historic cottages and new townhomes on small lots with mature oaks and street trees, and infill construction clearing is the most common job.

Quotes are available across the streets around the Farmers’ Market, Bicentennial Mall and Jefferson Street. Commercial and property-manager jobs nearby, including downtown, are welcome too.

Before you send us a quote request

  • Measure the stump across the widest point at ground level.
  • Count the stumps. Extra stumps on the same visit usually cost less each.
  • Check access. Measure your narrowest gate and note slopes, fences or decks near the stump.
  • Mark private lines. Sprinklers, invisible dog fences, lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point them out to us.
  • Decide on cleanup. Chips left as mulch, or hauled away and backfilled with topsoil.

What it costs

Price mostly depends on stump width, then on the number of stumps, access and cleanup. Most jobs run about $120 to $400 per stump, with a per-visit minimum: a small stump is at the low end and a big one is at the high end. Send us a photo and we’ll give you a firm quote. The Nashville cost guide explains each factor.

Yes. We work in Germantown and the rest of the Nashville area, including homes near county lines. Call or send the form with your ZIP code and a photo, and we’ll get back to you with a free quote.

How much does stump grinding cost in Germantown?

Price mostly depends on stump width: a small stump is at the low end and a big one is at the high end. Most jobs run about $120 to $400 per stump, with a per-visit minimum; how many stumps there are, access and cleanup matter too. Send us a photo and we’ll give you a firm quote.

Is stump grinding the same as stump removal?

Not exactly, though people often use the two names for the same job. Stump grinding uses a machine with a spinning cutting wheel to chew the stump down below the soil line; the roots stay in the ground and break down over time. Full stump removal digs out the stump and its main root ball, which leaves a bigger hole to backfill and usually costs more. If you want a stump gone from a lawn or garden bed, grinding is usually all you need. Full removal makes sense when a foundation, patio, pool or regrade is going in right where the stump sits.

What happens to the wood chips?

Grinding turns the stump into a pile of chips and soil. We usually leave it in the hole or nearby for you to use as mulch. Hauling it away and backfilling with topsoil is usually an extra charge, so just ask and we’ll include it in your quote.

Does someone need to call 811 before grinding?

Usually, yes. Tennessee 811 says anyone excavating with machinery needs their own locate request, made at least three working days ahead; the service is free. Before any grinding, Tennessee 811 is called to mark public lines. Private lines such as sprinklers, invisible dog fences, landscape lighting and septic lines are not marked by 811, so point those out.

Is the quote free?

Yes. The quote is free and there is no obligation. Send us a photo of the stump, its width at ground level and your narrowest gate, and we’ll give you a firm quote.
